“If you have a sponsor that does not have the same values as you have, you lose control of those funds,” Sean points out. He describes the importance of being comfortable with a DAF sponsor where you are recommending grants out of a fund you create where the sponsor has control over the dollar distribution. Values matter.
A DAF sponsor is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that allows donors to gift a tax-deductible donation into a fund, but any further grant recommendations to other nonprofits from that fund are simply that; recommendations. Using a faith-based sponsor that is more likely to align with your recommendations is an important consideration when setting up a donor advised fund.
